Dr. Stewart Fowler
Members of the ADCA—
I am sorry to tell you that Dr. Stewart Fowler passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2007, after a long illness. Dr Fowler was as instrumental as any one has ever been to Devon cattle breed improvement in this country and the world. Dr. Fowler was hospitalized on February 15th, had surgery on his right lung on the 19th to remove fluid and was in the ICU at Redmond Regional Hospital for two weeks before being transferred to Floyd Medical Center’s “Specialty Hospital” (Long Term Acute Care Unit: L-TAC Unit). He had developed Pneumonia and a bacterial infection in that right lung. The doctors also speculated that he had a small stroke during surgery that had he survived, would have left him with a feeding tube as well as a lung tube for drainage for the remainder of his life, in a Nursing Home. We are grateful that he was able to bypass that!
A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, March 10th. It was a beautiful Memorial with his WWII memoirs beside a trip-photo frame showing him as a young sailor, a lieutenant, and later on as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Displayed also was a large framed photo that was presented to him by faculty and staff at Berry College when he retired in 1987. The photo showed Stewart gazing into the face of a cow with one hand behind her head and the other placed lovingly around her neck. The love was evident and truly showed on both of their faces. This was his life.
