Charlie and Scott traveled to Chattanooga to represent the Devon breed at the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SAWG). This conference is to inspire farmers and individuals to farm with practices that are ecologically sound, economical and in a humane way. This conference was a great place to tell people about the Devon and how well they perform on grass. There were approximately 1200 hundred people at this event. Scott and Charlie talked with many people about the Devon and answered a lot of questions on the breed. If you would like to learn more about this conference go to www.ssawg.org. Charlie and Scott feel this event was very successful. Charlie said he had more inquiries at this event than any other event. Over 150 brochures were handed out; some wanted to know if there were breeders near them. Devon members if you get a phone call from someone that would like to look at your Devon, their interest could have been sparked in TN.

We are saddened by the news, of Clifton Wood of Longacres Farm, in Fairfield, Maine, passing away on Jan. 4, 2009, at the age of 83.

The 2008 Great Event lived up to its name. I would like to thank all the Board Members and volunteers that worked together to make this year a success. This includes everyone from the barn to the office, consignors, buyers, all the members that came to support the association and visitors. I would like to express a special “Thank you” to Jacob Owens the Show Chairman. I know he spent many hours putting this year’s event together.

Kit Pharo of Pharo Cattle Company spoke on his ideas about animal size, stocking rates, grazing and culling in his lecture of Pharo’s Philosophies. Mr. Pharo specializes in raising bulls and producing beef cattle best suited to finishing on grass. This was a natural fit with the Devon breed.

The annual American Devon Cattle Association conference show and sale was held October 24th and 25th in Culpepper, VA. The association has named this their “Great Event” and it lived up to the name.

The event drew over 100 members and interested individuals from many eastern, central and mid western states. Jacob Owens, the event organizer, explained that the association wanted to bring in speakers who could present information and ideas that would be helpful, educational and interesting to both beginning farmers and those who have been in farming for years or generations.

The Great Event 2008 sale is over. But you can still check out the impressive animals.

The American Devon Cattle Association and the 2008 Show Committee are very pleased to announce that Kit Pharo of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado has agreed to judge the 2008 ADCA Pen Show on October 25. Mr. Pharo will also address the ADCA in a lecture on the 24th at 2:00 P.M.

Since their first bull sale in 1990, demand for Pharo Cattle Company genetics has exploded and this April, they have over 300 bulls consigned in their Spring Sale. Kit Pharo is also well known for his management style and philosophy.
