What has been called the “Qualified Registry” in the past, will now be called the “Percentage Devon Registry.” The Percentage Devon registration will be getting a new look to make is clear the difference between the Percentage Devon paper compared to the Pure Devon registration paper. The Percentage Devon has been, and will continue to be, kept separate from the ADCA. The Association logo will not be on the Percentage registration paper. Please remember that the ADCA uses the word “PURE” to mean that there has been no cross-breeding in that animal. Keeping the Devon Pure is the goal of the ADCA, but we do recognize Percentage Devon.

2007 ADCA Sale crowd

The Great Event 2007 held in Washington, Pennsylvania October 25th lived up to its name with a very successful pen show of Purebred Devons from nine states shown by twelve exhibitors, and a large increase in numbers from last year’s show. The first sale in over 20 years showed enthusiasm for the breed from established breeders and many first-time buyers of Devons.

I am sorry to tell you that Dr. Stewart Fowler passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2007, after a long illness. Dr Fowler was as instrumental as any one has ever been to Devon cattle breed improvement in this country and the world. Dr. Fowler was hospitalized on February 15th, had surgery on his right lung on the 19th to remove fluid and was in the ICU at Redmond Regional Hospital for two weeks before being transferred to Floyd Medical Center’s “Specialty Hospital” (Long Term Acute Care Unit: L-TAC Unit). He had developed Pneumonia and a bacterial infection in that right lung. The doctors also speculated that he had a small stroke during surgery that had he survived, would have left him with a feeding tube as well as a lung tube for drainage for the remainder of his life, in a Nursing Home. We are grateful that he was able to bypass that!

The 2006 Devon Cattle Show combined both visual phenotype and ultrasound data appraisal. Dr Allen Williams of Tallgrass Beef performed the ultra sounding. Ray Ladner performed the visual appraisals on the animals just prior to and after leaving the ultrasound chute. The results of each phase were combined and a champion was chosen in this manner for the different classes.

Lakota Ranch of Remington, Virginia, garnered both the Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Bull honors. If there had been a Premier Breeder, Lakota Ranch would have taken both Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the show, as several of the other exhibitors were showing cattle purchased from the Enghs at Lakota Ranch.
